and rehabilitation of land in the Eastern Cape
Land rehabilitation is essential for enhancing ecosystem functionality, boosting land productivity, and reversing degradation. We collaborate with farmers to test, refine, and implement ecological rehabilitation activities that restore the land’s natural capital and support agricultural production.

Our hands-on restoration efforts are led by the Baviaanskloof Bewarea a non-profit entity established by Living Lands.
With a dedicated team and specialized resources, we have spent the past eight years combatting soil erosion, enhancing water infiltration, and removing invasive alien plant species. Initially focused on two landscapes, our projects have now expanded to encompass the broader region.
Planning, trials and support
Effective rehabilitation begins with pre-planning and evolves through shared learning. In collaboration with farmers, we test innovative strategies tailored to local needs, embracing a cycle of trial, error, and refinement.
This hands-on approach deepens our understanding of the long-term effects of rehabilitation interventions. Committed to the ongoing challenge of land restoration, we adapt and improve our methods based on real-world outcomes.
Achievements
Living Lands and the Baviaanskloof Bewarea have directly implemented active restoration on 20,000 hectares. The Baviaanskloof Bewarea employs 20 full-time staff, who work across the Baviaanskloof, Langkloof, and the Sarah Baartman region.
Our interventions include constructing ponds and silt traps, stabilizing gullies, revegetating Thicket and Fynbos vegetation types, and removing invasive alien plant species.
